What is Clutch ? (Power transmission by clutches, Types of tooth Clutch, Types of Clutches)- ITI ONLINE NOTE

 What is Clutch

1- Clutch is a mechanical device and type of clutch used for engage and disengage power transmission from driving shaft to driven shaft.

2- Clutch is use where positive drive (torque transmit without slip) is required.

3- Clutch is a mechanical device and type of clutch used for engage and disengage power transmission from driving shaft to driven shaft.

4- Positive clutch is use where positive drive (torque transmit without slip) is required.

5- In positive clutch two machine elements are used, one element is rigidly fixed to driving shaft.

6- And other machine element is free to slide axially on splined driven shaft and it helps for engage or disengage clutch.

7- Machine elements of positive drive have jaws which help to connect shaft (driving shaft and driven shaft).

8- Jaws may be in square shape, triangular shape or gear toothed.

9- According to use different type of jaw machine element is used in clutch.

Clutch

Application of positive clutch

1- They have very limited use.

2- However, they have some application where the synchronous drive is required. Advantages

3- They do not slip.

2- They can transmit large torque.

Disadvantages

1- Engagement of clutch cannot be possible at high speed.

2- Develop do not heat during engagement and disengagement because of rigid interlocking (no friction).

Power transmission by clutches

1- The purpose of the clutch is to connect or disconnect the various mechanisms to the power source.

2- Various types of clutches are incorporated in machine tools.

Types of tooth Clutch

Straight tooth clutch

1- The straight tooth clutch permits rotation either direction.

2- This type is more difficult to engage, since the mating teeth and grooves must be in perfect alignment before engagement.

Straight tooth clutch

Inclined tooth clutch

1- The inclined tooth clutch provides an easier means of engaging or disengaging the driving and driven members because of an 8 or 9 degree angle machined on the faces of teeth.

Inclined tooth clutch

2- Since this type of clutch tends to disengage more rapidly, it must be provided with a positive means of locking it in engagement.

3- Clutches of this type permit the shafts to run in either direction without backlash.

Saw tooth clutch

1- It permits drive in only one direction but is more easily engaged than the other two types of clutches.

Saw tooth clutch

2- The angle of the teeth in this type is generally 60 degree.

Types of Clutches

Dog clutch

1- The dog clutch provides a positive drive but can only be engaged when two elements of the clutch are stationary or are being gently mood by hand.

Dog clutch

Cone clutch

1- The cone clutch can be engaged progressive whilst one or both of the elements are rotating.

2- It can transmit low power

Cone clutch

Multi-plate clutch

1- The multi-plate clutch is widely used in machine tools to connect the transmission gearbox to the driving motor.

Multi-plate clutch

2- It is compact, smooth in operation and very powerful.

3- A brake is frequently built into the clutch so that the transmission gearbox is rapidly brought to rest when the clutch is disengaged.

Electromagnetic multiple disc clutch

1- This clutch joins the shaft and the gear.

Electromagnetic multiple disc clutch

2- It can be operated through a cable from a distance.

3- If direct current is applied, it builds a magnetic field on a magnetic coil.

4- It flows through the discs and firmly pulls and attracts the armature disc.
